Diversity Flute Workshop

Embracing cultural diversity through Music!
July 6-11 2015


Presenting the Diversity Flute Workshopdirected by teachers Geraldine Morillo and Carmen Marulanda with a particular emphasis on learning about the diversity and musical styles of the flute found throughout history, creating curiosity and expanding the view of the students while adding a multicultural environment to the class.

Flutists  are invited to participate in the workshop and will be assigned to groups according to current performance ability. Students will be coached individually and  in groups  using  a variety of repertoire including solos, duets, trios, quartets, and flute with guitar/piano music to develop ensemble skills.

Class Content


The class curriculum includes warm-ups, tone exercises, scales, arpeggios, articulation studies, rhythm and pitch reinforcement exercises, and flute ensemble rehearsals. 


Books used to address individual strengths and challenges in our daily studies  include Carmen Marulanda’s Flute Duets, Travesuras Books for Flute and Piano, and Classic flute Études and repertoire.

Student Requirements


Participating students will be divided into two main groups: 


  • Beginners: must know at least their G, F, or Bb major scales.

  • Intermediate/Advanced: must know all major scales up to 4 flats & sharps + chromatic.

Where: The Lowell Catholic High School - 530 Stevens St, Lowell, MA 01851.


When:  Monday-Friday July 6-10. Beginners group meet from 9:00-11:30am; Intermediate/Advance groups meet from 1:00-3:30pm. The workshop culminates with a performance and reception for students to share their progress with family and friends on Saturday July 11th at 11:00am.

Tuition: The total tuition cost for the workshop is $275.00 per student. This includes 1 book of studies and a T-shirt.


*Each student is entitled to a complimentary half hour private lesson with one of the teachers. The deadline to schedule the lesson in June 26th. Lessons will be scheduled between 11:30-12:30pm or 3:30-4:30pm.


About the teachers


Flutists Geraldine Morillo  and Carmen Marulanda have joined forces to enrich the musical studies of young flutist looking for a new ways to improve their flute and music skills. 


Both classically trained musicians and natives from South America, Geraldine (from Venezuela) and Carmen (from Colombia) are known to incorporate their home land's music into their student's repertoire to broaden their cultural  and musical knowledge.
